The population of the town is 64,5 thousand people (6,8 of the population of the Murmansk region). The distance from Murmansk to Kandalaksha is about 277 kilometres. Within the administrative district of Kandalaksha are the villages of Knyazhya Guba, kovda, Alakurrti, Zelenoborsky, Kotvitsa and other settlements.

The town of Kandalaksha was founded in April of 1938 and became one of the largest economical, cultural and sport centres of the Murmansk region.

Kandalaksha National Park was created in 1932, it is a unique nature protective scientific centre. For the last ten years Kandalaksha has been developing as a centre of international cooperation. In 2003 the building of complex of "Children Village" was finished within the framework of Russian Norwegian project. It is the fourth "Children Village-SOS" in Russia. Here will live about 100 children with foster parents from the region. International car checkpoint on the border with Finland was opened; it is called "Salla".

The leading branches of the economy are industry and transport. The main industrial branches are non-ferrous metallurgy and electrical energy.

In Kandalaksha you can find a lot of possibilities to deal with sport. The local Palace of Sport, the skiing centre , wonderful skiing slopes and pistes are at your disposal.

The main museum of Kandalaksha is the Museum of Local History and Economy and some other museums can be found there. The beautiful church of St. Nickolay is located in the old village of Kovda.
