Murmansk State Technical University Information about University On the base of direction of Counsil of Ministers of the USSR of the 11th January of 1950 in Murmansk was founded the high sea faring school (MHMS) in the system of the fish industry of the country. Before that neither in the USSR nor in the other countries of the world was institution of higher education training for work on fleets of fish industry only. In 1969 Murmansk higher sea faring school was renamed in Murmansk higher engineering maritime collage (MHEMS). In 1992 MHEMS was renamed in Murmansk State Academy of fishing fleet (MSAFF). In 1996 MSAFF was reorganized into Murmansk State Technical University (MSTU). The University transferred into large scientific education center of higher education of the North and West of Russia. The following faculties were created at MSTU last years: faculty of economy, law faculty, faculty of global economy and international relations, biological faculty. New directions of education oriented on "coastal" spheres of activity. One of the directions of MSTU is its integration with existing institutions of academic science and higher education in the region. It is impossible to consider problems of economical grow of the Murmansk region separately from problems of development of mineral raw material industry, which is one of the important industries of the region and the country. The development of mineral raw material base in its turn is impossible without fulfillment of staff, connecting with outflow of the population from the North. In 1996 under the financial support of the Administration of the Murmansk region Apatity branch on the base of the Kola Scientific centre of Russian Academy of Sciences (KSC RAS) was organised. Special departments of the branch are created on the base of Geological Institute of KSC RAS, Mining Institute of KSC RAS, Institute of problems of industrial ecology of the North of KSC RAS, Institute of chemistry and technology of rare earth elements and mineral raw material of KSC RAS, Murmansk maritime biological institute of KSC RAS, Polar alp botanic garden institute of KSC RAS. Students of the first and the second years of education on humanitarian, mathematical, natural scientific and social and economical courses are trained in Murmansk in the departments of MSTU having developed material and technical base. Students of the 3-5 and 6 (magistrate) years of education on professional and special courses are trained in the departments of Apatity branch of MSTU. Strong technical base are created at the University, there are more 700 modern computers, united into a network, constant Internet connection with the speed up to 11 Mbite, modern video conference studio. University Web -server www.mstu.edu.ru and region one www.murman.ru have support of the University, system of distance education is developed. MSTU is a collective member of Russian Transport Academy, it is part of Association of regional telecommunication engineering education of Russia, Association of technical universities. Scientific researches are developed actively at the University. Volumes of scientific works for 2002 year had grown up to 4 million rubles and made 13 million rubles. There are about 300 PhD students at the University, training on 23 courses. There are three dissertation councils on the following directions: "Technology of meat, diary and fish products and refrigeration productions", "History of philosophy", "Economy and management of national economy". Among the priority directions of development of MSTU is the international cooperation, including the making of agreements with foreign institutions of the higher education, international organizations and funds, providing with academic mobility of students, cadets, teachers and researchers, strengthening of the international image, organization of international conferences. Among the partners of MSTU are Universities of Norway, Sweden, Finland, France, Spain, Germany, Yugoslavia. International programs got the further continuation at MSTU. Norwegian scientific and education center, Russian and Swedish mining school are created on the base of MSTU. MSTU has cooperation with Universities of Belgrade, France, Spain, Germany, Sweden and Finland. Program of training of engineers in the field of water supply is realized jointly with Center of arctic technologies of the Oulu University. The University has joint projects with Ministry of Defense of Norway and Ministry of Defense of Russia on professional training of militaries. MSTU is the only institution of higher education of the region obtaining the license of State Technical Commission under the President of the Russian Federation on the program "Defense of information from unsactioned access". There are 3 academics, 80 doctors of science, professors, 190 candidates with degrees in different sciences, docents at the University. The total number of students and cadets is about 8000 persons. There are 13 faculties, 46 departments, magistrate, PhD courses, 10 centers, and preparatory courses at the MSTU. It is important also to mention Polytechnic lyceum, college of MSTU, Maritime academy at the University, three branches of MSTU. The University is the owner of teh largest in the world training sailing vessel "Sedov", booked in the Hinnes Book. The University trains students and cadets on 18 directions:
