Geology

Daika diabase in granites
Travelers of the past times called Russian Lapland as "Skull of the Earth". There is deep sense in this metaphor: there are a few places on the Earth, where can be found ancient mining rocks on the surface. Such large parts of the earth's crust are called crystal shield. Metamorphic, abyssal and sedimentary rocks are presented on the geological map of the Kola Peninsula. The largest part of the territory of the region consists of the ancient complexes of gneisses, shales, amphibolites, intrusions, granites, diorites, with the age to 3.0 milliard years.
